Class 350/3 EMU Interior Refurbishment
Diamond Rail was contracted to deliver a full turnkey interior refurbishment for the Class 350/3 EMU fleet, operated by West Midlands Trains and maintained by Siemens Mobility. The goal was to bring these 10 four-car units up to the same standard as the previously refurbished 350/1 and 350/4 fleets, enhancing passenger experience and aligning maintenance requirements at Kings Heath Depot in Northampton.
Working closely with Siemens Mobility, we successfully delivered a lean, high-quality programme over 22 weeks, transforming 2,300 seats and installing a fully refreshed interior across the fleet.
For this project, we:
- Supplied and refurbished all First and Standard Class seating, including new foams, fire barriers, covers, and leather arm/ headrests
- Removed and replaced carpets, refinished grab handles, and reinstated all furniture
- Provided all labour, logistics, and project management on-site at Kings Heath depot
- Built and quality-checked all seating at our Sheffield facility
- Managed all transport in tracked vehicles using bespoke stillages
- Delivered full compliance documentation, First Article Inspection, and client sign-off on every unit
One of the biggest challenges was managing the logistics and coordination of a multi-stage refurbishment process including fire compliance and first article inspections whilst maintaining our high standards throughout. With works taking place both on-site at Kings Heath and off-site at our Sheffield facility, timing was critical. To ensure seamless turnaround, we carried out cutting-edge time-and-motion studies to create a robust labour plan, tracked every delivery in real time, and aligned our fit teams with precise depot access windows.
